When Yours Are the Dry Eyes in the House

Tears are essential to protecting and maintaining the health of your eyes and vision. When your eyes aren’t producing enough tears, or the tears they do produce are of poor quality, the nerves of the cornea are exposed causing irritation. This is called dry eye.

Symptoms of dry eye can include constant burning and stinging, redness, soreness, grittiness, and the feeling that something is constantly in your eye.

If left untreated, dry eye can be more than just irritating – it can also lead to infections that can result in complications.

Causes of Dry Eye

There are several root causes of dry eye. With a comprehensive eye exam, we can diagnose the reason for your dry eye and provide you with an effective treatment plan.

Some examples of causes of dry eye are:

  • Environmental: a smoky environment, hot, dry houses during the winter, or dry, air conditioned homes in the summer
  • Medications: antihistamines, antidepressants, decongestants, diuretics, and hormone replacement therapies are just a few of the medications that list dry eye as a side effect
  • Age: some people may experience reduced tear production as they age and, subsequently, dry eye
  • Gender: women tend to be more susceptible to dry eye, especially those who are pregnant or over the age of 40
  • Skin and eyelid disorders: inflammatory skin disorders like rosacea or infections and inflammatory disorders of the eyelid can affect the lipid layer of the tear film, leading to dry eye
  • Systemic disorders and other diseases: Conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, diabetes, thyroid conditions, and Vitamin A deficiency can cause dry eye

Additionally, those who spend a lot of time working with digital screens, those who wear contact lenses, or those who have had laser eye surgery are more likely to develop dry eye.

Treatments/therapy

Treatments and therapies for dry eye are dependent on the type of dry eye you have. During your eye exam, we can discuss the various therapies to help you alleviate your dry eye symptoms.

Omega-3 fatty acids are nutrients found in fish that offer a variety of health benefits. Studies have shown that taking omega-3 supplements can reduce the symptoms of dry eye. Please book an appointment with us to discuss if supplementing your diet with omega-3 is the right choice for you. You’ll be happy to know that we have the best prices for omega-3 supplements in town!

Dry eye caused by blocked meibomian glands (glands in the eyelids that secrete oil that prevents your tears from rapidly evaporating) can be mitigated by using a warm compress. Applying a warm compress to closed eyes for ten minutes twice a day has proven to be effective at softening the hardened meibum blocking the glands.

Available over the counter at most pharmacies, artificial tears help to lubricate the surface of the eye, reducing the symptoms caused by dry eye. In general, artificial tears can be used several times a day. Some types of artificial tears contain preservatives, which can cause increased irritation in someone with sensitive eyes. Not all artificial tears can be used in conjunction with contacts, so exercise caution if you’re a contact lens wearer. Eye Solutions carries a selection of preservative-free artificial tears to help you find relief from your dry eye symptoms.

Prescription drops, like Restasis or Xiidra, and steroid drops can reduce inflammation on the cornea or stimulate tear production.

In addition to the various eye drops we carry, Eye Solutions offers other dry eye therapies including medical procedures and non-invasive alternatives. We will be happy to discuss all of your options with you during your appointment.
